A Stroll Down Memory Lane…Oh My Golden Memories…
The other day while having breakfast with the love of my life we happened to strike up several interesting conversations one of which, was about investments. She eventually asked me a question that took me back a ways. In fact, some old memories started to dust themselves off while coming back to life in my mind.
As I started to walk down memory lane, I also started think about the love of my life and how we first met. I’ll tell you, those were some exciting days…and someday I might even write about them. There are some stories there that are waiting to be told! I can remember much about her in those days, especially our first date, or outing is more like it. She was just the cutest little thing I had ever seen. It turns out she was a huge basketball fan too. Naturally I wanted to impress her a bit, so I really talked myself up as some sort of almost, could have been, Michael Jordan type of player. I figured with her being Asian and about 5 feet tall and me being about 6 feet tall, what harm could it do? We ended up going to our college gym to play basketball and she brought along her brother too. Her brother was pretty quiet during the whole outing.
That day I will never forget…where these little two gave me an a$$ kicking on the court like I had never seen before! They were both just unbelievable players. Yeah I know, pretty cool way to impress the girl right. How do you recover from such an embarrassing moment like that? What do you say to get your cool points back after taking a beating the worst boxer would be laughing at? Many years later she told me that her brother said, “…where did you find this guy? I thought you said he could play…He’s horrible.”
I was pretty much at a lost for words after that event, but I guess it all worked out end. To make a long story short, about a year later we got married and have been in love ever since 14 years later. I am sure if you go back far enough, some of you may be able to remember the first time you met the love of your life (assuming you have one), your first date, your first kiss, and your first romantic encounter. Hopefully these memories are pleasant ones for you as I know we don’t always get the dream we dream about…You know, these dreams can sometimes be downright nightmares in disguise!
Anyway, why am I talking about all this? Mostly because the question she asked me was about another first time? No, not that first time, if that is what you were thinking. Let’s not go that far back. She asked me when did I finally wake up to the value of gold and was willing to buy some. You know, this is a very important question that I had to take a moment to consider. This is because at some point, I did not know very much about gold or silver let alone why I should buy any. So this question really had some deeper meaning for me because somewhere along the way I underwent some sort of transformation that brought me to my current mindset of understanding the value of gold/silver.
In those early days, I do remember hearing some radio commercials about some company I had never heard of before talking about buying gold coins. Back then I thought they were talking about collector’s coins or something because other than that, I could not imagine why people would drop $250.00 on a gold coin. Silver, was not even a thought yet. Several years later I remember hearing a bit more about gold. However to tell you the truth, I don’t remember what really did it for me. I don’t know who or what really turned me on to it. Maybe it was silver that eventually brought me into the game. I do remember eventually reading some stuff from Ted Butler about how amazing silver was and how it could be the biggest opportunity of all time. Most likely that led me to do some research to investigate his claims. I guess the domino effect continued until where I am now.
I wish I would have bought those gold coins when they were only $250 dollars an ounce! I was lucky enough to get silver at around $6-7 dollars/ounce. I guess all of this relates to When will you buy Gold, at $250, $500, $1000… article. Because I focused heavily on silver, I did not get my first physical gold coin until after it was over $700 per ounce. I find it funny that one will not buy something at a cheap price, but is willing to do so at a much higher price. It would seem that at some point, each one of us will have some awakening moment where it will make sense to buy gold. When each person wakes up to what is going on and what real money is they will want to purchase gold/silver. The question is, at what gold price will that be for each of us. I suppose we will all have our own experience similar to finding our first love.
I would like to know what did it for you. What pushed you over the edge so that you wanted to buy gold/silver? If you anyone would like to walk down memory lane and share their first gold/silver experience, I would like to hear about it.

I was working in the US temporarily earning US dollars. Since I was over there by myself I had a lot of time to kill and started reading up on investments, gold, US dollar etc. I didn’t like what I read about the US dollar losing value so I decided to sink some of my savings into gold…and later on in silver. Best decision I ever made…
Thanks SW for sharing….I agree it was about the best decision I have made too. Looking to get some more during each dip.
I follow the price in GBP and silver/gold are at all time new highs so it doesn’t look like I will be buying for a while (or until the price drops quite a bit). Maybe with summer dolldrums arounds the corner the price will correct.
It would be a bonus to buy more so I am standing by!
